Considerations for calculating emissions

To calculate the emissions from household habits, the data on energy consumption in the residential sector for apartments and single-family houses, the mix of energy sources used, and the average consumption of household appliances from the Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving (IDAE) on the Consumption of the Residential Sector in Spain were used as a reference.
Additionally, emission factors (conversion of energy units to CO2 emissions) from different sources were used for the calculation:

  • Official carbon footprint calculator for organizations of the Spanish Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge: emission factor for natural gas.
  • Electrical Grid: emission factor due to the generation of electricity.
  • Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC): emission factor for diesel and coal.
  • To calculate emissions per person, an average of three people living in an apartment and four people living in a single-family house were considered.
